Top 5 Tattoo Questions I Get Asked (And Honest Answers)
As a tattoo artist, I’ve had hundreds of conversations with people who are excited (and sometimes nervous) about getting tattooed. Whether it’s your first or your fiftieth, questions always come up—and that’s a good thing. The more you know, the better your experience will be. Below are some of the most common questions I get, along with honest answers and tips from my side of the chair.
1. Does it hurt?
Yes. But how much depends on the location of the tattoo and your personal pain tolerance. Some areas like the ribs, feet, and inner arms tend to be more sensitive, while spots like the outer arm, shoulder, or thigh are a bit easier to sit through. Most clients describe the pain as irritating rather than unbearable—and honestly, the adrenaline helps. A good artist will check in with you and take breaks if needed.
Pro tip: Eat a good meal beforehand and stay hydrated. You’ll feel way better throughout the session.
2. How much does it cost?
Pricing varies depending on the size, detail, and placement of the tattoo. At Greeneworks Tattoo, I charge by the hour, and I always give you an estimate upfront so there are no surprises. Quality tattoos take time and skill, so try not to price-shop the same way you would a haircut. A solid piece of art that lasts a lifetime is worth the investment.
Bonus: I usually require a deposit to secure your spot—this goes toward the final cost of the tattoo.
3. What should I do before my appointment?
Get a good night’s sleep, eat a solid meal, and drink water. Avoid alcohol or blood thinners like aspirin the night before. Wear comfy clothes that give me easy access to the area being tattooed. If you’re bringing reference photos, make sure they’re clear and high-quality. And if you’re anxious, don’t stress—just let me know. I’ll talk you through everything.
4. How do I take care of my tattoo afterward?
I’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions before you leave the shop, but in general:
- Keep the tattoo clean and moisturized.
- Don’t scratch or pick at it.
- Avoid soaking it in water (no pools, hot tubs, or baths) for at least 2 weeks.
- Stay out of the sun while it heals.
The better you care for it, the better it will heal—and look—for years to come.
5. How do I know which artist is right for me?
Every artist has their own style, strengths, and vibe. Take your time looking through portfolios—not just on Instagram, but full healed tattoos too. Do you like their line work? Shading? Composition? The best results happen when the artist’s style matches your vision.
I specialize in bold, detailed blackwork and illustrative designs with a modern edge. If that’s your thing, I’d love to work with you.
